Your invoice

To set aside for the Modelo 130 and your return (the “tax piggy bank”). The withholding your client already deducts counts on account: only the difference is set aside.

All of the invoice's VAT is set aside: your real Modelo 303 deducts the VAT on your quarter's expenses. Income tax is an estimate using the rate you entered.

How it works

How the net amount of an invoice is calculated

  1. What you receive

Base + VAT − income-tax withholding. It is the same calculation as any app invoice: VAT and withholding are rounded separately, to the cent.

  2. VAT you will pay

The invoice's VAT is not yours: you pay it in the Modelo 303. Here all of it is set aside; in your real 303 the VAT on your expenses for the quarter is subtracted, so it may be less.

  3. Income tax to set aside (optional)

Base × (your income tax rate − the withholding). The withholding your client already deducts counts as tax paid in advance, so only the difference is set aside. It is the same rule as Autónomo Simple's tax piggy bank.

  4. What you keep

What you receive − VAT − income tax set aside. That is the base minus the withholding and minus the income tax you set aside.

Assumptions of the calculation
  • You enter the income tax rate: it is an estimate of your effective rate for the year (tax ÷ income), not a calculation of your return. If you leave it empty, no income tax is set aside.
  • All of the invoice's VAT is set aside. Your real Modelo 303 deducts the input VAT on your expenses for the quarter.
  • It does not include self-employed contributions or business expenses: it is what is left of this invoice before them.

How much of an invoice is really yours

When you collect an invoice, part of it is not yours: the VAT belongs to the Tax Agency, and the income-tax withholding has already been paid by your client on your behalf. What remains is the base minus the withholding, and from that you will still owe the income tax the withholding does not cover, your self-employed fee and your expenses. This calculator helps you avoid spending money that already has a destination.

When it helps

  • To price a job knowing how much you keep.
  • To decide how much to set aside from each payment and avoid surprises in the 130, the 303 and your return.
  • To compare an invoice with withholding and one without (for example, to a company and to a private client).

Common mistakes when working out the net

  • Counting VAT as your own income: you collect it, but it is paid in the 303.
  • Thinking withholding is a cost: it is an advance on your income tax and is deducted later.
  • Setting aside the full income tax rate without discounting the withholding already applied.
  • Forgetting the self-employed fee and other expenses, which come out of the invoice's net amount.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much do I keep from a €1,000 invoice with VAT and withholding?
With 21% VAT and 15% withholding on a €1,000 base, you receive €1,060: 1,000 + 210 VAT − 150 withholding. Of that €1,060, €210 is VAT you will pay, so you keep €850 before setting aside additional income tax, self-employed fees and expenses.
How much should I set aside for tax from each invoice?
The invoice's VAT (less the VAT on your quarter's expenses, when you file the 303) and the part of income tax the withholding does not cover: your effective income tax rate minus the withholding, applied to the base. Income tax can only be estimated; your real rate depends on the whole year.
Is withholding an expense?
No. It is an advance on your income tax. It is subtracted from the Modelo 130 and from the tax in your annual return; if it exceeds your tax, you get the difference back.
Why doesn't the net include the self-employed fee?
Because the fee depends on your income for the whole year, not on one invoice. You can calculate it with the self-employed fee calculator and subtract it from your overall income.
What income tax rate should I enter for the set-aside?
Your estimated effective rate for the year: the income tax you expect to pay divided by your income. If you do not know it, leave the field empty to see only VAT and withholding, or try several rates and compare.
